2021 Men's Class C Slow Pitch National Championship: Day Two Recap

OKLAHOMA CITY – After two days of play in the 2021 USA Softball Men’s Class C Slow Pitch National Championship, only three teams remain in the double-elimination tournament. Twenty-eight games were played on Day Two with 12 of them won via run-rule. Trinity/Big Dawg Sublimation clinched their spot in the title game after winning three games today (Aug. 28th) and boasting an undefeated 5-0 record through the tournament so far. The loser’s bracket semi-final game will kick things off tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. CT with the Championship Game to follow at 10:30 a.m. CT.

Northwoods Elite and Trinity/Big Dawg

Sublimation faced-off in the winner’s bracket finale on Saturday evening after both teams won their first two games of the day. Taking down The Mill/A3 in a 23-18 victory, Northwoods Elite continued to plow through the competition, defeating Stagecoach/Crest Exteriors 25-8 (four innings) to move one step closer to Championship Sunday. Trinity/Big Dawg Sublimation took on Demars Softball in their first game on Saturday, claiming the 29-21 come-from-behind win after trailing 12-1 in the first inning. Trinity dominated in their second game as well, taking the 22-11 (five innings) win from Shameless/Budweiser to advance in the winner’s bracket.

In the winner’s bracket finale, Trinity/Big Dawg Sublimation pulled off another come-from-behind win to capture the 19-15 victory over Northwoods Elite to send them to the Championship Game on Sunday morning. Trinity started off the game strong with eight runs in the first two innings, but Northwoods Elite answered back with a seven-run fifth led by Jeremy Bremness and Daniel Rothbauer each with a home run apiece to put them up 14-12 after five innings of play. Trinity didn’t stay down for long, however, and responded with a seven-run spot of their own in the sixth inning. One run crossed the plate for Northwoods Elite in the top of the seventh after a line drive single from Brandon Herrick scored Rothbauer, but they were unable to muster any more runs as Trinity took the 19-15 win to send Northwoods Elite to the loser’s bracket.

Fighting their way through the loser’s bracket was Newbreed/Gorillaz/Royce Geo who met Stagecoach/Crest Exteriors in the final game of the night. Newbreed had a long day of softball, playing six games to get to the 7 p.m. CT game against Stagecoach. Newbreed outscored their opponents 88-62 throughout the day before running out of steam and falling 20-0 to Stagecoach to end their run in the tournament.

Before defeating Newbreed, Stagecoach was on a roll with a 3-0 record until Northwoods Elite sent them to the loser’s bracket. Stagecoach picked up a crucial win against Russell’s Paint & Body in a win-or-go-home game to send them to the matchup against Newbreed.

Stagecoach’s offense exploded against Newbreed with 20 runs on 20 hits in three innings of play. A home run from Cody Olson got things going for Stagecoach, scoring the first two runs of the game, while a home run from John David tacked on the final two runs and sealed the victory for the team. Four different Stagecoach players sent a ball out of the park and helped lift them to the 20-0 (three innings) victory and a spot in the semi-final game on Championship Sunday.

Newbreed’s Scott Patterson and Russell’s Dustin Duncan lead the tournament with seven home runs each while Newbreed’s Blake Haag has racked up the most hits with 21.

Opening up Championship Sunday will be Northwoods Elite and Stagecoach/Crest Exteriors facing off in the loser’s bracket finale at 9 a.m. CT. The winner will advance to the Championship Game to take on Trinity/Big Dawg Sublimation at 10:30 a.m. CT with the “if-necessary” game scheduled for 12 p.m. CT.
