Ozarks stun War Hawks in closing moments, 1-0

CLARKSVILLE, Ark. – McMurry Men's Soccer caught an unlucky break at Ozarks Thursday afternoon, as the Eagles broke a scoreless tie with 2:24 remaining in regulation to earn a 1-0 victory over the War Hawks in Arkansas.

McMurry (3-8, 1-3 American Southwest

Conference) had its chances with nine shots and four shots on net, battling in what appeared to be an overtime-destined match. Instead, Ozarks (6-4, 3-2 ASC) crushed those dreams with a late goal from Daniel Lyon in the 88th minute.

The first half was a defensive struggle, as both teams posted just one shot on target. Ozarks had all the early chances with four shots in the first 14 minutes, one of which was on frame and saved by freshman goalkeeper Orion Patterson.

McMurry had its first shot in the 17th minute, but its best chance came on a center ball by Griffin Gayler closer to the halftime whistle.

Both teams picked up the pace in the second half with 15 combined shots – eight by Ozarks and seven by McMurry. The War Hawks ended with four on target for the match, while Ozarks had three. Patterson got credit for two saves.

McMurry not only found opportunities on shots, but also had nine corner kick opportunities – including seven in the second half. Unfortunately, the War Hawks were unable to capitalize. Ozarks finished with four corners.

Eight players recorded at least one shot, led by Gayler with two. He, Santiago NunezTrey Castillo and Dylan Caudle each had a shot on goal.

McMurry concludes its two-game road swing on Saturday, Oct. 9 at UT Dallas. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
