Tornados blank Howard Payne, win second straight



BROWNWOOD, Texas – Coming off a 6-0 win over Ozarks, the Concordia Texas men's soccer team won their second straight match in a 4-0 rout on the road at Howard Payne on Thursday.
 
The Tornados won in convincing fashion,

recording their second consecutive shutout and controlling the match from the opening minute.
 
Xavier Polk didn't wait long to start the scoring as he fired a strike into the top right corner of the goal, assisted on the play by Carlos Huato. In the opening minute, CTX gained a 1-0 advantage on wha would end up as the game-winner.
 
Melvin Molina recorded a pair of shots in the first 16 minutes, one of them on-goal, but an HPU own goal put the second score on the board, giving the Tornados a 2-0 lead in the 31st minute.
 
Christian Barillas and Theo Givens each fired a shot on-goal in the remaining first-half time, but the Tornados were unable to come away with another goal, taking a 2-0 lead to halftime.
 
Marco Vazquez added to the CTX lead in the 65th minute, notching his second goal of the year and pushing the Tornados' lead to 3-0.
 
Just five minutes later, Vazquez struck for another goal, assisted on the play by Theo Givens and Bernabe Torres. In the 70th minute, Concordia Texas' advantage extended to 4-0.
 
The Tornados' back line held stout, allowing only one goal for the remainder of the match, and CTX ultimately ended 90 minutes with a 4-0 victory over Howard Payne.
 
Joshua Redding earned his second shutout in the row, picking up four saves in the goal, and the Tornados' defense allowed only nine shots total.
 
Now riding a two-match winning streak, the Tornados will remain on the road for a matchup with Sul Ross State, traveling to Alpine, Texas for a 2 pm kickoff on Saturday.
